Warm up/ Journal Kayla has a close group of friends. Dan, one of her good friends, recently told her that he wants to date her exclusively. Kayla knows that Dan’s been sexually active in the past. She likes Dan but doesn’t think she’s ready for a serious relationship. Explain how Kayla could tell Dan about her situation. Be respectful and honest.

Priorities - are the goals, tasks, values, and activities that you judge to be more important than others. You and your date deserve to be treated with consideration and respect. Be yourself and communicate your thoughts and feelings honestly. Never feel pressured to do anything that goes against your values or your family's values. Setting Limits Make sure you set your limits at the BEGINNING of a relationship. Dating Decisions

Abstinence doesn’t mean you have… Intimacy – a closeness between two people that develops over time. But be careful you don’t confuse it with Infatuation – exaggerated feelings of passion.

Self Control – a person’s ability to use responsibility to override emotions. Set limits for expressing affection – How far will you go before its to much or to late. (Self) Communicate with your partner – Talk about what your limits mean. (Self) Talk with a trusted adult – As awkward as it may be they’ve probably already been there or knew someone who has. (Self) Seek low-pressure dating situations – Example: Home alone with partner or at a baseball game with partner. (Self) Date someone who respects and shares your values – Do not date people who disrespect, bully, or make you do things that your not ok with.

Effects on Physical Health Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) – disease spread through sexual contact. Most STD can be treated however not all… Herpes and HIV/AIDS …AIDS can be fatal. Unplanned pregnancy – Baby is at risk of limited health care.

Effects on Mental/Emotional Health Hurt because partners are not committed as in a marital relationship. Guilt because teens are usually not truthful to their parents about being sexually active. Loss of self-respect because sexual activity goes against personal and family values. Regret and anxiety, if sexual activity results in an unplanned pregnancy or an STD.
