Demographics 10 million pensioners in the Uk. By 2034 the 75+ age group will equal 6.8 million. Where as in ‘94 it was only 4million 3.4 workers to one pensioner. By workers to one pensioner. 17.8% of Scotlands population are pensioners. 14% of Scotlands population are school children.

Why the elderly are increasing Low birth rate so % of elderly looks higher. Improved health service. Improved housing. Relative wealth compared to recent past. Cheaper healthier foods available. Health awareness is much higher. The welfare state providing “cradle to grave” treatment.

Implications Increasing demand for health care bed blocking pensions will need to be provided for longer more demands for specialist housing Tax burden falling on fewer shoulders. Present generation will have to make provisions for their retirement.
