Laura Gibbons – SI641 Project A compilation of student and teacher materials to supplement a Dinosaurs! themed Learn it! Do it! day at the UM Museum of Natural History for K-2 groups – Student’s pre-visit materials – Student’s post-visit materials – Teacher’s guide to materials and concepts
Addressing a need: – K-2 ages greatly benefit from a possession of prior knowledge before an educational experience – Upon completion of my project, UMMNH intends to use compilation as template for all pre-, post-, and teacher guides for all Learn it! Do it! themed days for all ages Guiding design: UMMNH’s student journal for Dinosaurs! K-2 Learn it! Do it! day (used monthly) Guiding resources: Stripling’s and Dewey’s concepts of constructivism and inquiry
Student Pre-Visit Materials Addresses key concepts students will encounter: – What is a dinosaur? – Herbivores vs. carnivores Includes formative assessments (also in student journal) Addresses multiple strategies for multiple intelligences
Student Post-Visit Materials Reviews key concepts and exhibits – Exhibits are reviewed because of the proven connection between specific experience and education Includes summative assessment
Teacher Guide to Student Materials Includes background information, suggested procedures (lesson plans), options for modification (based on ages, levels), assessments, expansions, and alignments with MI GCLEs and the Common Core
Thank you! Happy Holidays!
