High School Lacrosse Programs Are Growing: Men Women Northeast East South Midwest West Totals:

You Have Options: Number of Collegiate Lacrosse Programs Nationwide MenWomen Div I60 91 Div II37 57 Div III Jr Coll28 17 Totals

Getting Started:

My Son Doesn’t Know Where to Begin! Start a conversation about the collegiate experience Talk about what a day-to-day would look like Browse some colleges athletic websites Don’t get caught up in DI, DII, DIII Reflect on what he wants to experience in college: – does he want an intense academic experience? – is he looking to receive training in a specific field? – Is he unsure of his career path? – Does he want to be on a highly successful team? – Is he interested in a large school or small? Be realistic and have an honest conversation with your son! Where does he see himself?

Know the Commitment Know the Culture The most important thing about playing college lacrosse is without a doubt academics. You will have to be in good academic standing to be eligible, and your lacrosse career will at the most be 5 years. Think about how your prospective college experience will affect your life after your lacrosse career is over

Two Concepts to Consider: EXTERNAL FACTORS VS. INTERNAL FACTORS

External Factors Division I, II, or III time commitment School tradition or “brand recognition” (Syracuse vs. UMBC, Duke vs. Limestone) Campus facilities- turf fields, stadium, weight room Play right away or develop in the program Financial aid or scholarships Geographic location Coach stability or tenure Friends and family influence Traveling for away games

Internal Factors What do you want to study? How far do you want to be from home? What style of coach do you want to play for? What kind of weather do you want to play in? How important is lacrosse practice compared to your academics or degree program? What kind of team culture do you expect? Where do you want to be when your athletic career ends?

Most College Recruiting Takes Place During The Summer and Fall Colleges have a number of ways of finding prospective athletes outside of High School sports, the most popular of these are: –Club Teams –Recruiting Camps –Collegiate/University Showcases –Club Showcases

5 Steps to Getting Started: 1.Introductory 2.Highlight Reel 3.Distribute to Realistic Schools 4.Maintain Contact 5.Attend/Research Showcases and Recruiting Events

What are College Coaches Thinking?

Dealing with thousands of recruits! Will want to see you play in person Are less concerned with stats Want to make the right choice for their institution! Utilize lacrosserecruits.com

Creating Highlight Videos:

Creating Highlight Videos Pt. I Acquire a camera Zoom out Appropriate music Add a title including your name, number, and contact information Only your best clips Less is more Should make coaches want to see you in person Under 10 minutes max 2-3 minutes ideal

Creating Highlight Videos Pt. II Defense: Good footwork Good positioning Clearing the ball Long passes Sliding with the body Every single ground ball you have ever picked up

Creating Highlight Videos Pt. II Offense: Good dodges Good passes Hard rides Effort plays Helping on clears Making athletic plays Picking up ground balls

College Visits:

Questions to Ask Current Players: What is campus life like? What are the coaches like? What are the practices like? Does your class schedule ever interfere with practices or games? What are the most popular majors on the team? What are the off-season workouts like? What other things on campus are lacrosse players involved with?

Questions for College Coaches: How many players are you recruiting this year? Can I get into your school with my current academic standing? If not, can the lacrosse program help me gain admission? What do I need to accomplish academically? What is the team culture like? How many athletic trainers work with the team? What priority does lacrosse have over academics?

Campus Facilities: How many athletic trainers work with the team? Do you have a team weight room? Turf playing surface? How many cafeterias? Large campus vs. small Check out the dorm rooms

In Summary….

Upper Classmen: For those who are in their Junior Year: 1.Create a highlight video from your HS season 2.Distribute to college coaches and send out s informing them of where you will be playing and when at summer events 3.Stay in contact – read between the lines regarding how much communication you are having 4.Try to make your own choice on a college, and if it doesn’t work out keep an open mind

Sophomores and Younger: In the short term you can work on two items: 1.Introductory 2.Highlight Video Over the long term you should focus on: 1.Developing lacrosse skills 2.Building relationships with coaches & teammates 3.Thinking about what you would like to study
