a.k.a. Distance Education

* 1700s: the very first distance learning schools * No internet * Students were sent pamphlets & textbooks in the mail to learn on their own * No tests * 1995: the first online degrees * Fake diplomas very popular

15 million students take all of their courses in a physical classroom 12 million students take some or all of their classes online million students will take all of their courses in a physical classroom 22 million students will take some or all of their classes online % of teachers had taken an online course 2007 Over 50% of teachers & principals had taken an online class 65% of administrators had taken an online class 2012

* Equal Education * It allows students who cannot go to school to still get an education * Individualized Learning * Your own schedule * Your own pace * One-on-one communication with teachers * No divided attention from educators

* Developed in 1999 * Designed to meet the needs of students not met in traditional education models and classrooms * Unmet needs: individual attention * K12’s Mission: to develop each child's full potential with engaging, individualized learning.

* Individualized Learning Plan for each student * A learning coach (usually the parent) * Daily lesson plans (available anytime, anyplace) * K-8: one teacher for each student 9-12: team of teachers for each student * Required attendance & standardized testing * Early grades: students spend no more than % of time on computer

For each part, it tells you if it is online or offline (icons on right); this is kindergarten, so only 2 are online Each lesson gives you an approximate length of time On the right, you can click on materials to view everything needed for the entire lesson You can go slide by slide through the lesson after clicking “Begin.”

Less of an introduction is needed since it is for older students You can go slide by slide through the lesson after clicking “Begin.” At the end, there is an assessment

* Education is no longer available only in physical classrooms * Online learning is no longer reserved for college (and sometimes high school) students * Technology of the 21 st century is changing the face of education
