 The ability to dissolve or break down into its component ions in a liquid  Example:  NaCl is soluble  Completely dissolves in water  AgCl is insoluble.
Coefficient- In a chemical equation, the number written in front of a reactant or product; gives the smallest number of particles of the substance involved.
Unit 2 - Chemical Reactions. Double displacement occurs between ions in aqueous solution. A reaction will occur when a pair of ions come together to produce.

Net Ionic Equations

E.g. Sr(NO3)2(aq) → Sr2+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) Net Ionic Equations In aqueous solutions, ionic compounds dissociate into their ions. E.g. Sr(NO3)2(aq) → Sr2+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) Total ionic equations show all dissociated ions of soluble ionic compounds. Spectator ions are ions that remain in solution and therefore are not involved in a chemical reaction. Net ionic equations show only ions involved in a chemical reaction (I.e. spectator ions are NOT included)

An Example The reaction between aqueous sodium chloride & silver nitrate. Chemical Equation: NaCl(aq) + AgNO3(aq)  NaNO3(aq) + AgCl(s) Total Ionic Equation: Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + Ag+(aq) + NO3-(aq)  Na+(aq) + NO3-(aq) + AgCl(s) Net ionic Equation: Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq)  AgCl(s)

Another Example Chemical Equation: The reaction between aqueous sodium chloride & magnesium nitrate. Chemical Equation: 2 NaCl(aq) + Mg(NO3)2(aq)  2 NaNO3(aq) + MgCl2(aq) Total Ionic Equation: 2Na+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) + Mg2+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq)  2Na+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) + Mg2+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) Net ionic Equation: No reaction!
