Chemical Reactions

Open your envelope and arrange the atoms into compounds that react with each other. Hydrochoric Acid + Sodium Hydroxide HCl + NaOH

A Chemical Reaction A chemical reaction is written as a chemical equation. A chemical reaction looks like this. Example: 2H 2 +O > 2H 2 O reactants yields products

Chemical equations need to be balanced because… what goes into the reaction, must come out of the reaction because of the Law of Conservation of Mass. Matter (mass) cannot be created or destroyed by ordinary means. Atoms can only be rearranged. So, let’s rearrange the atoms of your equation to follow this rule.

Your products should be… NaCl + HOH Sodium Chloride (salt) Written correctly H 2 0 (water)

There are two types of Chemical Reactions A. Endothermic Reactions Energy is absorbed as the reaction happens. The reaction can feel cold to the touch. Bonds are breaking during this reaction. B. Exothermic Reactions Energy is given off as this reaction happens. The reaction can feel warm or hot to the touch. Bonds are made during this reaction. This type of reaction happens in your body = your body temperature

Endothermic Reactions Exothermic Reactions

Here is the real life application of this experiment….
