Essential Question…  How can I experience Jesus Christ in my life today?  Sacrament Video Sacrament Video 3

By the conclusion of this unit, you will be able to say… I can define the 7 sacraments of the Catholic Church and the effects of each. I can explain how each sacrament carries on the ministry of Jesus in the world. I can explain the signs, symbols, rites, and rituals of the 7 sacraments. I Can Statements… 4

What are sacraments?? In his ministry, Jesus laid the foundation for the sacraments and they became a matter of faith at the Council of Trent, in  They are effective signs:  Given to us by Jesus through the Holy Spirit, they bring about what they represent. »They have the power to change us. »They heal us, nourish us, and make us holy. »Example: Baptism not only is a celebration of being children of God, but we actually BECOME children of God. 5

What are sacraments??  They are acts of the Church and the most important celebrations of the Church, which allow us to live as a community of disciples. They unite us as the Body of Christ.  What sacraments have you received and how have they helped you experience God in your life? 6

What are sacraments??  They give us grace, an invitation to share in God’s life and love, and help us to see him in all things.  What things in your life cause you to stop and reflect on the wonder of God’s presence in our world? 7

Sanctifying Grace  Each sacrament effects change in our lives as long as we respond to God’s grace. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, each sacrament gives us grace, which is called sanctifying grace.  Enables us to: –Love God –Love ourselves as God loves us –Love others as we love ourselves –Live as God calls us to live  We must be properly disposed to receive this grace – commitment to live according to the grace of each sacrament. 8

The Purpose of the Sacraments  Threefold purpose is to:  Sanctify us: make us holy, giving us the grace we need to live as disciples of Jesus and members of the Church;  Build up the Church as the Body of Christ so that the Church ca be an effective sign of God’s Kingdom in our world;  Offer worship to God so that we can be closer to him, give him thanks and praise, and return to us the grace we need to live as God’s people. 9

Stages of Christian Life  The sacraments are grouped into three categories which represent the 3 stages of Christian Life: 1.Birth and Growth 2.Healing 3.Mission 10

Stages of Christian Life  Birth and Growth  The Sacraments of Christian Initiation – we are born into the Church, strengthened and nourished. »Baptism »Confirmation »Eucharist 11

Stages of Christian Life  Healing  The Sacraments of Healing – we experience God’s forgiveness, peace, and healing. »Penance and Reconciliation »Anointing of the Sick 12

Stages of Christian Life  Mission  The Sacraments at the Service of Communion – we are strengthened to serve God and the Church through service to others. »Holy Orders »Matrimony 13
