GETTING THE MOST OUT OF ICTs Making your programs work for you

One size does not fit all What do you choose to use? What do your teachers “make” you use? Are these tools meeting your needs? To develop your skills, you must consider: When preparing for an assignment, what do you do well? When preparing for an assignment, what doesn’t work for you? What device is going to work for you?

Tools to help with time management/planning Outlook Calendars: Student calendar and your own Syncing and sharing calendars between devices Google Docs - drafting and review OneNote Facebook for group work and collaboration - don’t forget event reminders! Put reminders where you’re guaranteed to look (Facebook, sticky notes, your mirror...) The best planner is useless if you don’t look at it

Tools to help with learning Chrome Web Store Learn to love free apps! Google Docs research tool Wikipedia is your friend Google Scholar: set up some alerts...make Google work for you Google Books: digitize your own library Twitter PLNs Online Referencing Generator and automatic citation generators Khan Academy (there’s an app for that)

Tools to help with organising ScoopIt (or Pinterest or any of the thousands like it) File structures - make it meaningful FOR YOU. Your structures should give you easy access to files throughout your schooling. Download Google Drive for PC to allow easy drag n drop sharing with your teachers/study group (beware of sync time at school)

Where to from here? Find the tools that work for you Get into a good habit of using them in your own way Prevent disaster: backup your files and make sure you are not going to lose content (esp if you use sticky notes!) Manage your devices (stay away from “dodgy” sites) Use YouTube/Atomic Learning/Emmaus videos to guide you through how to use programs to their full potential.
