6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 6 October 23rd, 2015 Science Weekly Review Coming Soon in Science October 23 rd – October 30 th Monday 10/26: “Team Up Against Drugs” Students are encouraged to wear their favorite sports jersey or other sports apparel in support of saying no to drugs. Tuesday 10/27: “You’re Worth a Minion Bucks!” Students are encouraged to dress like minions (yellow shirt and jeans)! Yellow shirts will “caution” students against drug use. Wednesday 10/28: “Super Heroes Say No to Drugs” Students can wear a superhero themed shirt or dress like a superhero (in compliance with the dress code). Thursday 10/29: “Twinning the Fight against Drugs” Students can pair up with a friend and be “twins” for the day to show support for each other and their friends in saying no to drugs. Friday 10/30: “Drugs and I Don’t Mix” and “Scare Away Drugs” Students wear mismatched clothing for “Drugs and I Don’t Mix” or their Halloween costume for “Scare Away Drugs.” 10/19 The students practiced finding the mass of objects using the triple beam balance scale. 10/20 The students completed the color challenge that allowed them to practice using graduated cylinders to measure volume. 10/21 The students were introduced to The Lifejacket Challenge. The Big Question for this investigation is: How can an understanding of density help to design a life jacket? 10/22 The students found the mass of a certain volume of liquid. They used the mass and volume to create a ratio and find the density of the water. 10/23 The students created ordered pairs of the mass and volume of water graphed the ordered pairs. 10/26 Students will create and carry out a plan to find the mass of salt water. 10/27 Students will create ordered pairs and will add the salt water data to the water graph from Friday. 10/28 Students will write an explanation for how they know which liquid is denser. 10/29 Students will investigate how they can find the volume of a solid. 10/30 Students will find the mass and volume of solids.

6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 4 October 23rd, 2015 ELA with Mr. Knowles *All students are required to read at least three AR books every marking period. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The three AR books and quizzes are due on November 18, This past week students read chapters 2-6 of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. For each chapter students had to identify and journal the main idea, unfamiliar vocabulary words, and collaborate effectively with peers. Students also utilized Edmodo.com to enhance their understanding of Greek Mythology that influences this novel. ELA Next Week Next week students will continue Module #1, Unit 1. On Monday students will take a quiz for chapters 1-6. You can find Module #1 here: language-artshttps:// language-arts Social Studies Next Week Next week students will take an in-depth look at early settlements and the ways man changed his environment and also the way the environment caused early man to adapt. Social Studies with Ms. Hall This week students started a new standard for social studies. The concept they are working on is the impact farming had on humans and the development of civilizations during the Stone Ages. Students worked with an interactive computer game that was focused on Stone Age tools. You can access this site on the web from: Middle School Student Council Homecoming The Addison Middle School sponsored the first Middle School Homecoming dance.
