LaQuanda Lee English 12 Period 2 IS IT ACCEPTABLE FOR MODELS TO HAVE EATING DISORDERS?

AVERAGE WOMAN VS. AVERAGE MODEL

HOW THE MEDIA TRICKS US Why isn`t the photo on the left acceptable? How do you think changing this photo made the model feel about her body as a woman?

HOW DO MODELS EFFECT SOCIETY?  Seeing women, like the ones below, everyday on television can make other women feel like less than perfect. Therefore causing poor self-esteem and hundreds of women with eating disorders.

EVEN CELEBRITIES FEEL PRESSURED TO BE SLIMMER.

GRAPH SHOWING RESULTS IN ANOREXIC AND NORMAL MODELS

 Dieting consists of consuming the correct quantities of every food group. So why do so many people believe that dieting means barely eating? DIETING OR BARELY EATING, WHAT`S THE DIFFERENCE?

WHAT IS ANOREXIA?

 Loss of bone density (causes dry brittle bones)  Severe dehydration, growth of long hair in effort to keep body warm  Muscle loss and weakness EFFECTS OF ANOREXIA

WHAT IS BULIMIA?

 Possible rupture of the esophagus from frequent vomiting  Tooth decay and staining from stomach acids  Chronic irregular bowel movements and constipation as a result of laxative abuse. EFFECTS OF BULIMIA

 Maura`s eating disorder began in the 8 th grade after her mother passed. It got so terrible, she could barely walk from damaging an important nerve just by crossing her legs. She says not only was she starving herself, she was starving feelings of depression and abandonment and worthlessness. TRUE STORY: MAURA KELLY

 At the peak of her disorder, she was 5’11 and weighed 70 pounds. Even at this state, she was still insecure driven by early request by her agency to lose “a couple pounds”. She created a hole almost too deep to recover from. TRUE STORY: GABRIELLE FITCH

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR THESE MODELS TO BE SO SLIM?

HOW HARD IS IT TO BE A MODEL?

A FEW FACTS  Most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for anorexia.  Ten years ago a plus size model averaged between a size 12 to 18, what is considered plus size today, would be between sizes 6 and 14.

 About 69% of females in one study said that models in magazines influence their idea of the perfect body.  47% of girls in the 5 th through 12 th stated that magazine pictures influenced them to lose weight A FEW MORE FACTS

Any Question?
