Presentation transcript:

PRESENTER: H. Stephen Straight Professor of Anthropology & of Linguistics Senior Adviser for International Affairs Binghamton University’s Global Studies Minor

DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES PROBLEM, NEED, AND SOLUTION DISCIPLINARY GROUNDING IN ANTHROPOLOGY THE GLOBAL STUDIES SEMINARS Binghamton University’s Global Studies Minor

Desired Learning Outcomes: Ability to … Use a language other than English in fundamental contexts of intercultural communication. Marshal knowledge of global diversity and commonality with respect to values, beliefs, and worldview. Make generalizations about cross-cultural differences in perspective with minimal oversimplification or stereotyping. Relate one’s globally-oriented coursework, language courses, study- abroad experiences, and related studies to overall educational, career, and personal goals.

Problem, Need, and Solution Problem: Students receiving Binghamton’s International Studies Certificate were not achieving the desired learning outcomes. Need: Substantive, credit-bearing pre-departure, in- country, and re-entry “intervention” Solution: A Global Studies Minor, with increased course requirements, including GLST seminars

Disciplinary Grounding in Anthropology Social-science methodology  most notably ethnographic participant-observation Humanistic breadth  emphasis on language and culture Multidisciplinary inclusivity  focus on interaction between history and physical factors in the development of different ways of life

The Global Studies Seminars GLST 394: The Study Abroad Experience  1-credit online course, taken in Winter or Summer Session  Completed during program abroad, however short or long  All of the assignments involve peer-to-peer interaction.  Emphasizes activities that engage and explore the study-abroad site. GLST 490: The Global Studies Capstone  2 credits, taken in the semester after return from study abroad  Meets 1.5 hours per week all semester  Half of the work consists of discussion of topics taken up in 394.  Other half consists of a summative capstone project.
