A HEALTHY START TO 2016 How to Incorporate Physical Fitness into Your Everyday Plan

TODAYS AGENDA  Introduction  Self Assessment  Video Clip  Why is this important?  How to incorporate physical fitness in all content areas

AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DR. AWAY

THE WHY  Research shows that today's youth are more sedentary than ever, and that physical inactivity is the cause of many health problems (Lambin, Dept. of Kinesiology and Health).  Physical activity in schools provides many benefits to students, including improvement in academic achievement, test scores, attention, concentration and on-task behavior (Lambin, Dept. of Kinesiology and Health).  Many students on our campus do not have access to physical activity on a daily basis. It is our job as physical educators to provide the necessary resources to our teachers in order to provide our youth with the knowledge and skills to be active for a lifetime.

PLAN OF ATTACK-3 C’S  Communication  Consistency  Collaboration

STABILITY BALLS Stability balls can replace chairs.  You can rotate a few around throughout a class period.  Helps with attention and focus  Good for the core and leg strength  Can be a reward for good behavior  Can be used for a consequence (sit ups and crunches) or a ticket out the door  A lot quieter than chairs  Students are more likely to lean back in a chair and relax, causing their heart rate to decrease and the amount of oxygen flowing to their brain to also drop. That makes them tired and they find themselves struggling to stay focused, which impacts their ability to learn new things and store that knowledge for later recall.

CLASSROOM BRAIN BREAKS/CHALLENGES

ADDITIONAL TECHNIQUES  Universal Center  Athletic stance, rotate hips, let arms follow, followed with shoulder and head, knees stay bent.  White Crane  Stand on one leg, knee up, palms together above head. Focus on the belly.  Isometric Palms and breather  Palms push together, knees bent, inhale up, exhale down, arms out  Wrist shakes and hands down  Palms facing ears, shake back and fourth

THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL  In 2013, less than half (48%) of high school students (64% of 9th-grade students but only 35% of 12th-grade students) attended physical education classes in an average week. 3  Girls (17%) vs Boys (34%) who participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per days  The percentage of high school students who attended physical education classes daily decreased from 42% in 1991 to 25% in 1995 and remained stable at that level until 2013 (29%). 3  In 2013, 42% of 9th-grade students but only 20% of 12th-grade students attended physical education class daily. 3

BE AN ADVOCATE  Post signs in your classroom  Encourage students to go out for sports or take part in activity  Encourage kids to play during their lunch or to workout after school
