Warm Up – Identify prepositional phrases, verb phrase, and subject of the following sentences: 1.What happened to your car? 2. From Virginia have come many of our presidents. 3. Here are your gloves. 4. What are you doing on New Year's Eve?

Vocabulary Quiz!!!!!!!!  Clear your desk of everything except a pencil.  You will have no more than 25 minutes to complete the assessment.  When you are finished please remain quiet and begin your next vocabulary lesson.  Make sure your name is on the assessment before you turn it in.  If you have separate setting you must take your pencil and line up.

Into the stadium filed the throng of eager fans. 7. Through these halls have passed generations of dedicated lawmakers. 8. In the center of the harbor stands the Statue of Liberty. 9. From every window streamed tons of ticker tape and confetti. 10. Along the cobblestone streets stood restored colonial houses.

Possible Theme Statements for The Three Little Pigs  Work hard for success.  Hard work will eventually lead to positive outcomes.  Work hard the first time and get the job done properly.  Ignorance can lead to deception.

Steps to Identifying Theme: 1.Read the title. Does it reveal anything? Does the meaning of the title change as you read the story? 2. Examine the details of the story and the bearing of the character. What is the conflict? How does the protagonist deal with the conflict? 3. Identify the tone of the story. Analyze the author’s diction, details, imagery, and syntax. Are there certain repetitions of words, phrases, actions, or events? 4. Analyze the resolution. What is the author trying to say by ending the narrative this way? How would the outcome change in an alternate ending? What might the comparison suggest?
