Lesson 6: Converting Measures

Most math problems are about counts or measures Most math problems are about counts or measures. In the United States, we use two types of measurements. Customary and Metric

Customary: Inches Feet Yards Miles Ounces Pints Quarts Gallons Pounds

Metric: Millimeters Centimeters Meters Kilometers Millimeters Liters Grams Kilograms

Equivalent Measurements: Length 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard 5280 feet = 1 mile 1000 mm = 1 meter 100 cm = 1 meter 1000 m = 1 km 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 mile = 1.6 km

Equivalent Measurements: Capacity 16 oz Equivalent Measurements: Capacity 16 oz. = 1 pint 2 pints = 1 quart 4 quart = 1 gallon 1000 mL = 1 L 1 quart = 0.95 Liters

Equivalent Measurements: Weight/Mass 16 oz Equivalent Measurements: Weight/Mass 16 oz. = 1 lb 2000 lb = 1 ton 1000 mg = 1 g 1000 g = 1 kg 1000 kg = 1 tonne 2.2 lb = 1 kg 1.1 ton = 1 metric tonne

Converting from one unit to another unit involves multiplication or division by a constant that defines the relationship between units. Number of first unit x constant = number of second unit

Example: Anthony took 36 big steps to walk the length of the hallway Example: Anthony took 36 big steps to walk the length of the hallway. If each big step was about a yard, then the hallway was about how many feet long?

Answer: The units are yards and feet. The constant is 3 ft. per yard Answer: The units are yards and feet. The constant is 3 ft. per yard. 36 yds x 3 ft per yd = 108 ft The hallway is about 108 feet long. The answer is reasonable because it takes more feet than yards to measure a distance.

Example: A full 2 liter beverage bottle contains how many milliliters of liquid?

Answer: The units are liters and milliliters Answer: The units are liters and milliliters. The constant is 1000 mL per L. 2L x 1000mL per L = 2000mL

Example: The 5000 meter run is an Olympic event Example: The 5000 meter run is an Olympic event. How many kilometers is 5000 meters?

Answer: The units are meters and kilometers Answer: The units are meters and kilometers. The constant is 1000 m per km. k x 1000m per km = 5000m = 5 km

Example: Jojo weighed 8 pounds 10 ounces at birth Example: Jojo weighed 8 pounds 10 ounces at birth. How many ounces did James weigh?

Answer: This is a two step problem 8lbs x 16oz Answer: This is a two step problem 8lbs x 16oz. per lb = t = 128 ounces 128oz + 10oz = t Jojo weighed 138 ounces at birth

Practice: A room is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide Practice: A room is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide. What are the length and width of the room in yards?

Answer: 5 yards long and 4 feet wide.

Practice: Seven kilometers is how many meters?

Answer: 7000 meters
