The Republic of Texas President – Sam Houston Vice President - Mirabeau Lamar Capital - Houston

Annexation Texas wanted to be annexed by the US for defense and money, but President Andrew Jackson didn’t want to go to war with Mexico.

Relations with Indians When Lamar became president, the relations with Comanche and Cherokee suffered. Fighting broke out and Texas pushed the natives westward.

Relations with Tejanos Although having supported independence, Tejanos suffered discrimination from white settlers.

Immigration Germans moved to Texas and established farming communities. Many of them opposed slavery. Settlement continued to expand westward. Texas was land rich and cash poor.

The Texas Rangers Formed to guard the frontier against Mexican and Indian attacks.
