Building Capacity on Protected Areas Law & Governance Connectivity– Legal Issues Module 9 Exercise 1 Understanding the Legal Options for Implementing Connectivity Conservation

Background  Purpose  Create an appreciation of the different legal options for implementing connectivity conservation.  Provide an opportunity for Learners to understand the intersection between law and connectivity conservation.  Enable Learners to reflect on the manner in which provisions of existing laws could be used in a practical setting.  Encourage critical thinking about the respective strengths and weaknesses of existing laws and how they relate to one another.  Structure  Introduction to exercise (suggested time allocation, 5 minutes)  Group work (suggested time allocation, 60 minutes)  Joint class discussion (suggested time allocation, 55 minutes)

The Case Study

The Exercise  The Government wishes to promote connectivity across the landscape.  You are groups of consultants who have been tasked with identifying how existing laws could be used to promote connectivity within the landscape.  Reflect on the practical scenario and the map.  Develop responses as follows:  Recommendations on how to use the existing laws to support the proposed corridor.  The strengths and weaknesses associated with each of the existing laws.  The possible relationships between the existing laws that will support the proposed corridor.

Joint Group Discussion  Each group will briefly explain its responses.  The groups will engage each other with a view to improving each other’s understandings of how to use existing laws to support connectivity conservation.
