What does Robotic surgery mean? Conventional Laparoscopy – Surgeon using laparoscopes – Operates while standing – Using hand-held, long-shafted instruments, which have no wrists. – Use a 2D video monitor to see an image of the target anatomy. Modification of the surgical procedure (Robotics) – providing surgeons with superior visualization – enhanced dexterity – greater accuracy and ergonomic comfort – Better outcome of some major surgeries

Da Vinci vs. Zeus (two Robotic systems by Intuitive Surgical, Inc) Zeus system in 1997 Da Vinci named after Leonardo da Vinci 1998 Da Vinci system progressed well and is now one the most used system in the world Zeus failed by 2003 and is now replaced by Computer Motion

Questions to study! Why did Zeus fail and Da Vinci survive? Will this innovative medical technology revolutionize the world of surgery? Why are some surgeons in big hospitals like MGH reluctant to using this technology at this day and age? Are the companies (e.g. intuitive surgical) benefitting with this medical technology? What does the future hold for such technologies?
