San Diego de Alcala’ By Nathan

Who founded the mission and when was it founded? Founded by: Father Junipero Serra Founded on: July 16, 1769

Where is it located and what number was it of the 21 missions? Located: 6 miles from the city San Diego on Presidio Hill overlooking Mission Valley Mission number: It was the first mission

What Indian tribe lived at the mission and did they like living on the mission? The Yuma Indian tribe lived at the mission. Some of the Native Americans liked being at the mission but others did not because they had to give up their way of life.

What was daily life like on the mission ? The daily life on the mission was tough and hard work. Everyone had a job to do.

Did the Native Americans like their lives at the mission? Some of the Native Americans did because they got fed and saw many new things but others didn’t because they had to give up their way of life.

What did the mission grow? The mission grew crops, wheat, and corn. They also planted vineyards, raised cattle, sheep, beans, and barley.

Was the mission ever damaged? Was it fixed? The mission was attacked by 800 Native Americans and was rebuilt and made much larger.

What do you think of this mission and does it have any interesting facts ? I think this mission is important because it was the first link in the “chain”. The chain stretches 650 miles along the El Camino Real or King’s Highway. On Presidio Hill there stands a cross on which the following words are written ”Here Father Serra first raised the cross”.
