What is data sharing? Controlled sharing with trusted colleagues or peers (researchers: replication, validation) Open sharing via public repositories (funders: maximal return on investment) Impact on the effort involved

Researcher incentives for sharing data Benefits to their academic career Influence of sharing norms within direct research circle External drivers: Funder policies Publishers requirements (DAPs) Support services (DM support and training, TDRs) incentives-for-sharing-researchdata.pdf

How does DANS stimulate researchers to share? Deposit guidance: instructions per discipline, information on the selection and preparation of the data, legal information, etc. Different access levels, optional embargo period Reuse with clear acknowledgement of sources (conditions of use, data citation)

What could the RDA do? Core mission: WGs on data citation, data publishing, data management Work with researchers: – Develop and promote best practices/recommendations for data sharing within different disciplines Work with funders: – Develop support services for researchers – Provide guidance to funders who are designing their open data policies
