Argument Essay Argumentative assignments may require you to read research where interviews, surveys, observations, or experiments are used to support a point of view. Detailed research allows you to learn about the topic and to understand different points of view regarding the topic so that you may choose a position and support it with the evidence collected with the research. Regardless of the amount or type of research involved, argumentative essays must establish a clear thesis and follow sound reasoning.

Purpose of an Argument Essay The purpose of writing an argument essay is to inform the reader that your viewpoint of an issue deserves consideration. Unlike a persuasive argument, you are NOT attempting to bring the reader to take action or to agree with your point of view. You only want the reader to consider your point of view by showing both sides of the issue but casting doubt on the opposing side.

Paragraph #1 In the first paragraph of an argument essay, set the context by reviewing the topic in a general way. Your style of writing should be logical and professional. Next the author should explain why the topic is important or why readers should care about the issue. Lastly, students should present a clear thesis statement.

Transitions Transitions help you write an essay with a logical progression of thought. Use HOT and SAW as transitions to connect ideas. ( HOT: However, Otherwise, Therefore) (SAW: Since, Although, When or Whenever) Use phrases such as: While it is true that… In spite of the fact that the author believes… Opponent claim that…

Paragraphs 2&3 Each paragraph should be limited to the discussion of one general idea. Some paragraphs will directly support the thesis statement with evidence collected during research or during reading research on the topic. It is also important to explain how and why the evidence supports the thesis. However, argumentative essays should also consider and explain differing points of view regarding the topic. Depending on the length of the assignment, students should dedicate one or two paragraphs of an argumentative essay to discussing conflicting opinions on the topic. Students should set up a counterclaim that explain how opinions do not align with their thesis, how the authors of the research may not be well informed or how the research or information might be out of date.

Support and Examples for Paragraphs The argumentative essay requires well-researched, accurate, detailed, and current information to support the thesis statement and consider other points of view. Some factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal evidence should support the thesis. However, students must consider multiple points of view when collecting evidence. As noted in the paragraph above, a successful and well-rounded argumentative essay will also discuss opinions that go against your opinion on the topic that you are writing about in the essay.

Paragraph #4 Conclusion A conclusion that does not simply restate the thesis, but readdresses it in light of the evidence provided. It must be effective and logical. Synthesize the information presented in the body of the essay. Restate why the topic is important, review the main points, and review your thesis.
