Are we a sugar smart school? School Name: Date: Welcome to today’s assembly. Who’s heard of Change4Life before? Have you seen the change4life logo or branding anywhere? In this assembly we are going to find out how we can be a sugar smart school?

Sugar facts Sugar comes from plants. Sugar dissolves in liquid. Sugar gives our bodies energy. There is sugar in fruits and milk this type of sugar is good for us. Too much ‘added’ sugar can affect our health. Let’s have a look at some sugar facts! You might already know some these facts. Sugar comes from plants. Sugar dissolves in liquid, you might have seen your parents putting sugar in their cups of tea. Sugar gives our bodies energy There is sugar in sweet fruits and milk this type of sugar is good for us because these sugars are naturally found within fruit and milk Too much ‘added’ sugar can affect our health.

Where can we find added sugars? Sugar can be added in the things we eat and drink to make them taste sweeter. Some people add more sugar to their cereals or hot drinks. Not everything that contains added sugar tastes sweet so we don’t always know if we are eating or drinking it. So what are added sugars and where can we find them? But some foods have added sugars to make them taste sweeter. Sugar can be added in the things lots of things we eat and drink Some people add more sugar to their cereals or hot drinks. Not everything that contains added sugar tastes sweet so we don’t always know if we are eating or drinking it. These added sugars aren't natural and too many can affect our health.

Can you think of some types of food or drink that contain added sugar? Who can think of a type of food or drink that is high in added sugar… Give examples. Ice cream, chocolate bar, cookie, fizzy/sugary drinks and cakes.

How can too much added sugar affect our health? Can anyone tell me a reason why we shouldn’t have too much added sugar in our foods? Eating too much sugar can be bad for our teeth, eating and drinking too much can cause tooth decay and we may have to go and visit the dentist more. Too much sugar can make us become an unhealthy weight and can be bad for bodies.

How much sugar should we have? But how do we know how much sugar we should eat in a day? If you are 4, 5, 6 years old put your hand up? You’re recommended to have no more than 5 cubes of sugar a day. If you are 7-10 put your hand up? You’re recommended to have no more than 6 cubes of sugar a day. Anyone 11 years and over (including adults!)? You’re allowed to eat 7 cubes of sugar a day. This amount includes the sugar that is already in your food and any that is added. Its easy to have too much sugar in just one snack, meal or drink … shall we find out how? 4 to 6 year olds 7 to 10 year olds 11 years +

Sugar quiz! Let’s see how sugar smart we are by playing the sugar quiz! Split the school into two teams, team A and team B. Ask a teacher to keep track of scores. Ask a pupil from each team to answer each questions, the team with the most correct answers wins.

Q.1. How much sugar? 6 cubes! Q: Who wants to have a go at guessing how much sugar there is in a bar of chocolate? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 6 cubes! So that’s more than recommended for the whole day for a 4-6 year old and a 7-10 year old!

Q.2. How much sugar? 5 cubes! Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a sugary yogurt? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 5 cubes. That’s the recommended daily limit for a 4-6 year old.

Q.3. How much sugar? 5 cubes! Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a juice drink? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 5 cubes.

Q.4. How much sugar? 2 cubes! Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a juice drink? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 2 cubes.

Q.5. True or false? Eating apples and bananas is bad for your health and can cause tooth decay. False! Now let’s try a true or false question… Q: Eating apples and bananas is bad for your health and can cause tooth decay A: The answer is False! Apples are sweet and they do have some sugar in, but they are natural sugars and not added sugars. The natural sugars are found within the fruit and are broken down in our bodies in a different way.

Don’t forget to get the balance right … Who can tell me what this picture is called? Does anyone know what it is trying to show us? This is the eatwell plate. It shows us the balanced of the different 5 food groups we need to stay healthy. We need to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and also starchy foods. We also need a good amount of meat, fish eggs and beans and also milk and diary food. As you can see the purple section is the smallest. This is the food group that contains all the food and drinks that are high in sugars and also fats. As you can see this food group is the smallest, so this reinforced the message that we need to eat less sugar!

What can we do now? Download the app Make sugar swaps Tell our friends and families Eat less sugar! www.nhs.uk/change4life-beta/campaigns/sugar-smart/home Now that we are sugar smart, what can we all do?! We can ask our grown ups at home to download the app so that we can scan our food and find out how much sugar is in it. We can make some sugar swaps, such as eating more fruit and vegetables instead of biscuits. We can tell our friends and families what we have learnt today. Let’s try to eat less sugar to make our bodies healthier.

Let’s be sugar smart! Now we are sugar smart, who thinks they can go home and share something they have learnt about sugar? Let’s all be sugar smart together!!! Thank you for listening.
