Presentation transcript:

LTI no 37: Cook cuts off finger 18/Aug/00 A cook was preparing lunch for a camp in Fahud. He was cutting chicken with a large kitchen knife.

His hand and fingers are NOT placed correctly. In a moment of inattention he cuts off 2/3 of his index finger. He will be off work for 3 weeks and have a disability for the rest of his life. LTI no 37: Cook cuts off finger 18/Aug/00

This is the correct way to place the fingers when cutting chicken. A special chainmail steel glove for kitchen staff would protect his hand.

What caused this LTI: - Wrong technique used by the cook - Distraction, inattention, lack of concentration (why?) Discuss in your team: - How could this incident have been prevented? (PPE, training, concentration, good equipment, good working conditions ???) - Do you have to use sharp knives or tools in your job? - How do you ensure your hands and fingers are protected? - What could go wrong?
