Event #1 – End of French and Indian War (7 Years War)  Albany Congress (1754):  Purpose was to get Iroquois on the side of the British  Albany Plan of Union (1754):  Benjamin Franklin’s plan for the colonies to “join or die”  Ultimately, it was rejected by colonies for not enough independence, rejected by Britain for too much independence  Treaty of Paris 1763 (Peace of Paris)  France is essentially removed from North America  Great Britain is the major power in North America  Impact of the war?  Helps promote an identity for colonies and Colonial Unity  Britain needs revenue to pay for war……..

Event #2 – End of Salutary Neglect  What is it?  Colonies were left alone by Britain, few restrictions  Colonies flourished  Why did it end?  To help pay for F & I War, England began taxing and strictly enforcing Navigation Acts:  Enforced mercantilism – idea that colonies existed for the benefit of the mother country (Britain)  Examples of Salutary Neglect Ending?  Sugar Act, Stamp Act, etc.

Event #3 – Pontiac’s Rebellion  What was it?  Native American Rebellion led by Chief Pontiac  Where did it occur?  In the Ohio Valley Region (Present day Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan)  West of the Appalachian Mountains  Why did it occur?  Chief Pontiac did not want to surrender land to the British after the F & I War  Impact?  Leads directly to………..

Event #4 – Proclamation Line of 1763  What was it?  Order by King George III that prohibited colonists from expanding beyond Appalachians  Why was it issued?  In response to Pontiac’s Rebellion  Hoped to limit conflict with Native Americans  Impact of the line?  Tensions increased between British and colonists  Colonists felt betrayed; just fought in the F & I War  Many colonists moved west anyway
