Brand New Start Paul Weller Introduction to unit 4: Controlled Assessment Understand the vocabulary relating to the controlled assessment Define ecological footprint Explain how people can reduce their ecological footprints

Unit 4: Controlled Assessment You have now completed 50% of the course! Unit 4 Controlled Assessment (25%) – Now until the end of term – September to October half term Unit 2 People and Planet (25%) – October half term onwards – Exam June 2012

Unit 4: Controlled Assessment Approximately 20 hours Most of this will be done in lesson time Includes: – The preparation day (Thursday 7 th July) – The fieldwork day (Friday 8 th July) The lessons between now and then will help you to understand the theory relating to the topic that our controlled assessment is based on.

Unit 4: Controlled Assessment High control – No help from us – you can use anything you’ve put in your green folder – You only get one go at the high control work – we will lock this away when it’s done Low control – We can help you and give you guidance Storing work – We will keep a green folder in the classroom with your work in it – you mustn’t take it home – Anything in this can be used in the high control sessions

RAFL We will use a RAFL to help you keep track of what you’re doing You can start doing some of this tonight.

Ecological footprints Your controlled assessment is going to be an investigation into how urban residents are reducing their eco-footprints Ecological footprint: – The area of land and sea required to provide you with everything you need to live (land, food, water, waste disposal, raw materials, energy) Urban residents: – People that live in towns and cities

Ecological Footprints Measured in global hectares (gha) – Global average is approximately 2.2gha per person – UK average is 5.6gha per per person – London average is 4.5gha per person – Cambridge average is 5.79gha per person 1.Why does the UK have a larger eco footprint than Ethipoia? 2.Why do you think London has a lower eco footprint than the UK average? Extension What do you think the eco footprint would be like of someone that lived in a rural part of the UK? Why would it be different to someone that lived in an urban area like London?

The average eco-footprint of a Cambridge resident

How could people reduce their eco-footprint?
