 Founded in 1907 as a messenger company in Seattle by James E. Casey  Almost all deliveries were made by foot or bicycle  In 1919 the company made its first expansion to California and adopted its present name  In 1924 UPS introduced the first conveyor belt system for handling packages to increase efficiency  In 1975 they became the first package delivery company to serve every state  In 1992 UPS was now delivering to more than 200 countries and territories across the world

 Every day 15.8 million packages are shipped around the world through UPS  UPS trucks are assigned routes for pickup  Occasionally, customers drop off packages at their local UPS store

 Packages picked up are delivered to the nearest hub  A hub is central sorting faculty  Millions are located throughout the world  Local stores feed their packages to the hub for sorting and shipment  The packages are sorted by zip code and put on conveyor belts according to their destination, which maximizes productivity

 After leaving the general hub, the packages are shipped to the local hub near their final destination  They are shipped through “feeders” like a tractor trailer, airplane, or small delivery truck  Trailers are equipped with “roll backs” which are rollers that allow packages to be moved from front to back quicker and easier  This allows one UPS worker to pack a 24 foot trailer in just one hour!

 Each UPS driver delivers up to 500 packages a day  At the hub when packages are loaded for local delivery they are loaded in reverse order in which they are to be delivered  To optimize driver efficiency UPS headquarters continually research delivery trends and traffic patterns for routes  DIADs are used to electronically transmits data including signatures and delivery times to UPS computers where customers can track their packages online
