Event Technology Hannah Hibbart

Introduction to Event Technology.. There’s lots of technology used in events today. This technology has evolved over time to match new circumstances.. Staging Big Screen Technology Lighting Sound Projection Mapping

Staging Stages themselves have changed so much over the years.. With a little help from the Glastonbury Festival archive sound online, I have been able to see what the main changes are..

Pyramid stage 1971

Pyramid stage in 1985 Basic lighting, Small speakers, Little set decoration

Pyramid Stage 2013 Big screens, blacked out stage, more lighting

Pyramid Stage 2015

Big Screen Technology

Big screen Technology Big LED screen technology has been introduced a Events for a number of reasons.. To enhance the crowds experience To create an atmosphere To show footage of the event to the audience that they would have otherwise missed out on Giving warnings/information to people A form of advertising Showing close ups of the act

Big screen Technology Enabling people to see the act from the back of a large crowd Side screens either side of the stage can help deter the crowd from the main stage, and help them spread the density of people Giving exclusive footage eg. Greenday at reading, The tent was at capacity therefore they had to close it, we watched greenday perform from the main stage on the big screen.

Big Screen Technology Big screens are used to show videos of the crowd, this gives visitors a feeling of being a part of the festival leading to excitement Used to show important information like changes to set times, or fire evacuation ect They’re also used in part with the music, they can show clips from the artists music video which tells the story behind the song, or appropriate visuals to add to the atmosphere

Big screen Technology

Lighting Lighting can be used in many ways.. For Effects For an Atmosphere Changing a mood Making a more memorable show Defqon 1 Festival 2013

I gave you life Now you must give it back to me.. Defqon1 Festival, Saturday HkAI

Lighting How lighting affects the audience.. -The lighting changing to match the mood of the song -The style of lighting to comprehend with the tempo of the music -Colour of the lighting to create an atmosphere -It makes it a performance, not just an act -It directly correlates to the sound within the show, eg sustain in the music = sustain within the lighting effects

Lighting -All of these create an atmosphere within the lighting effects --Colour --Style --speed of change --direction of change

Sound

The front of house (FOH) is the mixing booth where the sound is controlled All the sound mixers and channel controls are here They’re usually the big box at the back of the crowd in front of the stage at music festivals They’re placed in the front of the stage so the sound engineer can hear the sound how the crowd does

Sound In 1969 at Woodstock festival, this is the FOH..

Sound This is the FOH at V-Festival in 2009

Sound This difference in the FOH’s demonstrates how new technology has grown to be more complicated, but also better managed, older tech would have been less reliable and more unpredictable At music festivals they now have a largely digital sound mixer with many different ways to control sound These are often complicated and large scale The speakers are designed in different ways to accommodate for the audience

Sound Bill Hanley designed the sound system for Woodstock in 1969, you couldn’t rent them back them they had to be built from scratch He built the speakers for 150,000 people, when 500,000 showed up the sound was still great and everyone could hear He designed the sound system not only for the crowd, but also for a gathering of people up on top of the hill behind the crowd His work has revolutionised sound technology today

Sound A line Array speaker is a number of speakers put together in a slight curve shape. This is the type of technology Bill Hanley innovated by his way of building sound systems. It gets the sound to a larger audience at a better quality

Projection Mapping Projection Mapping is a relatively new method of creating a more interesting and dynamic stage set for an audience. Projection mapping is a method of fitting a projection to a certain shape or area; It can be used to distort, change or add effects to a ‘normal’ space or object

Projection Mapping Mapping can be used to create visuals on a stage set, it can totally transform the space from something quite plain to something very elaborate This makes the stage more appealing to look at, and more interesting for the audience to view Combined with lighting, music and performance, the possibilities are endless

Projection Mapping When combined with pyrotechnics and lighting effects, mapping works best, it makes the act come to life An atmosphere is created with the projections for the crowd, this makes them part of the event itself Its also a tool in advertising, companied use it to gather a crowd to advertise a product in a well known space, e.g. a building in the centre of London..

Projection Mapping I I Beyonce performing at the Billboard Awards 2011 She is interacting with the projection mapping here so it almost looks real. Its a great balance between real and virtual. This video has amazing visual mapping content, it shows Beyonce as a brand being up to date with technology and reflects her impact. The performance is transformed into a show including much more than just singing

Any Questions?
