The Bible in History 1456 (Latin Vulgate) Gutenberg Bible 1516 Erasmus’s Greek Text of the New Testament (Textus Receptus) 1526 William Tyndale’s New Testament the first English translation. He was burned at the stake for his work. Because he put the scripture in a common language The Matthews Bible: Thomas Matthews was a pseudonym for John Rogers. Both O.T. & N.T. into English 1539 The Great Bible by Miles Coverdale, named because of its size and beauty. King Henry VIII had them chained to the pulpits. People would gather everyday just to hear it read Geneva Bible, used by the Puritans, and Pilgrims. It was small, easy to carry and it was on yellow paper which made it easy to read by candle light Authorized Version (King James Bible) This translation took the gospel around the world. Modern Day: NIV, NAS, NLIV, MET, etc….
