ENTRY 4- STARTER 1. 3 / / / / / 1

Quiet WorkStand & Deliver Open Discussion Team Work THE CURRENT CLASSROOM “MODE”

STANDARDS FOR QUIET WORK I am listening to the teacher. I am not talking. I am taking notes or doing other silent work as directed. I am paying complete attention to the teacher.

PROS AND CONS

Notebooks Entries Are: In pencil Labeled with the date Labeled with the entry number Labeled with a proper title Written very neatly Clearly legible Followed by a horizontal line to separate entries on a single page Written so as to maximize the use of each page Representative of the student’s best effort Complete

ENTRY 5 – Today’s Objective I will review probability models including the complement of an event. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? Quiz Friday with at least one of the problems from today on it EXACTLY AS IS HW tonight with 3 problems, at least 1 of which will also be on Friday’s quiz Chapter test where I will have to simplify algebraic expressions

ENTRY 6 – WORD WALL Fair Game: If there is an equal chance for each player to win a game. Unfair: Not equally likely for each player to win.

Quiet WorkStand & Deliver Open Discussion Team Work THE CURRENT CLASSROOM “MODE”

DURING OPEN DISCUSSION… I contribute my ideas to class discussion. I listen to others when they are speaking. I wait for the appropriate time to contribute my ideas. I am polite in my interactions with other students and the teacher.

ENTRY 7- Problem 5-23 “PICK A CARD, ANY CARD” What is the probability of picking the following cards from the deck? Write your response as a fraction, as a decimal, and as a percent. A.P(black)? B.P(club)? C.If you drew a card from the deck and then replaced it, and if you repeated this 100 times, about how many times would you expect to draw a face card (king, queen, or jack)? Explain your reasoning.

ENTRY 8 – WORD WALL When finding the probability that something will not happen, you are finding the probability of the complement. Everything in the sample space that is not in the event is in the complement.

ENTRY 9 : Problem 5-24 Sometimes it is easier to figure out the probability that something will not happen than the probability that it will happen. When finding the probability that something will not happen, you are finding the probability of the complement. Everything in the sample space that is not in the event is in the complement. A.What is the probability you do not get a club, written P(not club)? B.What is P(not face card)? C.What would happen to the probability of getting an ace on a second draw if you draw an ace on the first draw and do not return it to the deck? Justify your answer.

ENTRY 10: Problem 5-25 “Rob and Travis” What makes a game fair?

Problem 5-25 continue… Rob decided to play a card game with his friend, Travis. He told Travis that if he picked a black card with a value of nine or greater, Travis would win. (Jacks, queens, and kings are considered to be greater than nine.) If Rob picked a red card with a value of less than nine, Rob would win. (Aces are considered to have the value of one in this case.)

DURING OPEN DISCUSSION… I contribute my ideas to class discussion. I listen to others when they are speaking. I wait for the appropriate time to contribute my ideas. I am polite in my interactions with other students and the teacher.

Problem 5-25 continue… A. What is the probability that Travis will win? B. What is the probability that Rob will win? C. According to the definition in the introduction to this lesson, is this a fair game? Why or why not?

Entry 11/12: Closure “Probability for ‘Either/Or’ Events.” Create an example and explain how you would calculate the probability when two different outcomes are favorable (such as the example of the raffle ticket and cash). Then, record any questions you have about probability. Your questions might relate to things that you have already worked on or may be about situations you have not yet studied.

Entry 13: Homework Problems 5-28 through 5-33 Let’s look through them together to see if we have any questions before you work independently at home Remember your quiz Friday will be about 50% problems from your homework

END OF CLASS 3 minute warning from class leader Planner check by class leader (homework must be recorded for each class period today) SECURE YOUR GEAR Class, ATTENTION Dismissal by group

Entry 15: Problem 5-26 The city has created a new contest to raise funds for a big Fourth of July fireworks celebration. People buy tickets and scratch off a special section on the ticket to reveal whether they have won a prize. One out of every five people who play get a free entry in a raffle. Two out of every fifteen people who play win a small cash prize. Given:

Problem 5-26 continue… If you buy a scratch-off ticket, is it more likely that you will win a free raffle ticket or a cash prize? Explain your answer. What is the probability that you will win something (either a free raffle entry or a cash prize)? What is the probability that you will win nothing at all? To justify your thinking, write an expression to find the complement of winning something.

STANDARDS FOR QUIET WORK I am listening to the teacher. I am not talking. I am taking notes or doing other silent work as directed. I am paying complete attention to the teacher.

So far you have calculated probabilities of different events and analyzed a game to see if it was fair. Along the way, you also found the probability of either one or another event taking place (such as winning either a raffle entry or a cash prize in part (b) of problem 5-26).

Entry 16: Closure “Probability for ‘Either/Or’ Events.” Create an example and explain how you would calculate the probability when two different outcomes are favorable (such as the example of the raffle ticket and cash). Then, record any questions you have about probability. Your questions might relate to things that you have already worked on or may be about situations you have not yet studied.
