The U.S. was hesitant to annex Texas because… WHY NOT ANNEX TEXAS? The U.S. was hesitant to annex Texas because… they did not want to anger Mexico. Texas had too high of a debt. Texas was a slave state.

NATIVE AMERICANS CONFLICT WITH TEXANS Why do you think the Native Americans did NOT like the Anglo American settlers? (answers will vary) President Houston called in the Texas Rangers to protect the interests of the Native Americans.

Texas Attempts to Raise Money TEXAS IN DEBT Texas Attempts to Raise Money Congress placed a tariff on various goods imported into Texas. Congress imposed property taxes, business taxes and land title fees.

HOUSTON’S SECOND TERM Economic Policy eliminated dozens of government positions cut the size of the army sold navy ships Peace Policy Houston felt the Native Americans had certain rights and there should be peace.
