Culture, Government & Economics Episode II: Government

DEMOCRACY A form of government in which the people elect leaders and rule by majority.

Who makes decisions? What do citizens get to decide? Do we get a say in everything (true democracy)? Why might this not work very well? Or do we choose people to make the decisions for us (representative democracy)?

MONARCHY A government in which a King, Queen or head of a royal family makes the decisions. Not many exist any more Past – England, France, China, Japan England is now a “constiutionial monarchy” Queen Elizabeth II has very little power if any. Current – Saudi Arabia King Abudullah has absolute power.

DICTATORSHIP A government where a single powerful ruler has total control. Rules by force (has total control of military). Dominates all aspects of a country Saddam Hussien Iraq Adolf Hitler Nazi Germany

COMMUNISM A political system where government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a nation. Leaders are chosen by the Communist Party (some actually are dictatorships). Restricted individual rights. Strict control of economy and daily life. Kim Jong-Un Supreme Leader, North Korea Xi Jinping General Secretary, Peoples Republic of China

OLIGARCHY A few people make all of the decisions for everyone NOT an example Representative Democracy No one “officially” uses this form of government
