Line Delineates space, outlines form, conveys a sense of movement or direction Define space: lines to mark edges of wall, floor, ceiling Movement: depends on type of line appears within an object and moves your eyes up and down or across an object. Functions of Line

Effects & Feelings Created by Lines Diagonal/zigzag: Curved lines: Too many lines: tiredness, confusion action, energy, excitement, & motion softer, graceful, natural, less formal, & adds interest

Review the effects of lines 1. increased width, rest 2. excitement, motion 3. gracefulness, natural 4. increased height, strength, action 5. strong, dignified & steady Horizontal Diagonal Curved Vertical Straight

Pass Out Line Assignment Draw some type of design using black ink, markers, pencils, or crayons. (Be Creative) Must use all four types of line (vertical, horizontal, diagonal & curved) 10 pt deduction for each type not illustrated Must use at least 5 different thicknesses of lines. 10 pt deduction for each size of lines not illustrated. A ruler will be helpful with this assignment. Make it neat. Your work will be displayed Show example

Space Three dimensional expanse that a designer is working with The area around or between objects within that expanse  Positive Space – Space taken up by an object.  Negative Space – Space around an object. Convey feelings  Too small: crowded or snug/secure  Too much: lonely, uncomfortable  Large & Open: luxury, freedom

Too much: lonely, uncomfortable Large & Open: luxury, freedom

Too small: crowded or snug/secure

Arranging Space To make small area seem larger:  keep as much open as possible  Limit number of furnishings  Choose small, plain designs  Avoid patterns  Choose mirrors and dual use items To make large area seem smaller:  Divide room with dividers or furniture  Use area rugs  Use larger furniture Two Choices: fill or leave open Remember, how do you want people to feel in your room?

Space Activity Cut a large shape from the half sheet of paper provided by the teacher. Throw away all scraps. Cut the shape into AT LEAST NINE or more pieces—BE SURE NOT TO LOSE ANY PIECES FROM THE ORIGINAL SHAPE. Re-form the pieces into the original shape on the second sheet of paper provided by the teacher—kind of like putting a puzzle together. Expand the shape by gradually sliding the pieces apart. Experiment with different amounts of negative space between the pieces. After deciding upon the most pleasing arrangement, glue the pieces to the sheet of contrasting paper. Answer the following question: How is the new design more interesting than the original shape?

Shape The outline or form of solid objects. Attractive designs use shape effectively. Makes objects appear heavy or light. Too many different shapesUncomfortable Same shape repeatedlyBoring Large, heavy sofa Stability

Form – describes shape and structure of solid objects Ways to achieve effects  Large, heavy objects or small objects placed together = stability  Top heavy or something that tips easily = instability Weight  Apparent weight: how heavy does it seem? Color, texture, size, etc.  Small heavy object = larger, lighter object

Shape and Form Activity You have 1 minute to draw any shape you like. Now, imagine how that shape could look if it were three dimensional. You have 4 minutes to create that shape out of your clay. Show me

Texture The way something looks or feels. Two Types of Texture Tactile texture: feel of surface Visual texture: appearance It can also affects color.
