Writing for Understanding Jamie Tinning Sarah Garrett

Step One: Using writing to help your students learn key social studies concepts Writing during social studies activities supports students’ writing fluency. Writing challenges students to clarify, organize, and express what they have learned. Owner of written products motivates students to excel.

Step Two: Give students rich experiences to write about To write powerfully, students need a variety of memorable, interactive experiences on which to base their writing. These activities must tap into the multiple intelligences to give all learners something to say.

Step Three: Have students record their ideas, thought, and feelings in prewriting activities Prewriting activities allow students to record their reactions, feeling, reflections, and ideas immediately after the interactive experiences they have had. Fun and engaging prewriting activities; matrices, flowcharts, sensory figures.

Step Four: Provide students with authentic writing assignments Authentic writing assignments motivate students to write with style and meaning. Giving your students a wider variety of writing activities promotes experimentation and makes writing more exciting. –Journals, poetry, stories, letters

Step Five: Guide students though the writing process 1.Give clear expectation and precise guidelines for writing assignments. 2.Have students write a first draft. 3.Use peer-feedback groups. 4.Require students to make revisions. 5.Have students edit their final drafts.
