How does the water get warm enough to support life? FIRST: Ocean water sinks through cracks (vents) in the crust. (Remember the crust?) Mid-Ocean Ridge Not only did they find that there were MOUNTAIN RANGES under the sea. They found that the longest mountain in the WHOLE WORLD was under the sea. One American Geologist who studied this was… Harry Hess In studying Ocean Floors, he discovered something previously thought IMPOSSIBLE! Maybe that Wegner guy was RIGHT! Hess believed, at the mid-ocean ridge, Molten material rises up from the mantle and erupts! The molten material then “spreads out” pushing older rock to both sides of the ridge.
