What is the EYFS? It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of the Reception year.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are: 1. Literacy; 2. Mathematics; 3. Understanding the world 4. Expressive arts and design. Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are: 1. Communication and language 2. Physical development 3. Personal, social and emotional development. Your child will be learning skills and devleoping knowledge through 7 areas of learning and development.

How you can find out how your child is getting on? Your child will have their own learning diary to show their progress. These will be available for parents to both contribute to and enjoy looking through. Each child in reception will have a ‘key person’. This is to help your child become settled into Brentry Primary school, and help with the continuity of sending and receiving information. Brunel class has a parent communication board where class information is easily accessible for parents. Brunel class have their own page on the website.

Reading Books Children will start off with a sharing book. After half term your child will bring home a reading book to help them start learn how to read. You will be given a diary to record comments in, when you share/read a book with your child. Children will start to be given key words in their reading diary. These will need to be practised at home to help your child in their development. At Brentry Primary school we teach phonics through read write inc.

Uniform Please ensure that your child’s name is in all items of clothing, including shoes and P.E kit. Spare clothes (pants, socks) may be a good idea at the beginning of term in case of any accidents! P.E kit can be kept in school. No jewellery is permitted to be worn in school. Your child will be taking part in lots of interesting and sometimes messy experiences, so may come home dirty! To prepare your child for this please send them in with wellies, coats etc.

General School Information School day 8:45-3:15 Free school dinners until KS2 ( School dinners booked at the office £2.20 per day) Packed lunches clearly labeled with name. Children are allowed to bring in a healthy snack for break time or snack money to purchase form the snack stall, a maximum of 50p. Please send your child in with a water bottle.

Medical Matters Any sickness, diarrhoea, must be followed by 48 hrs absence. Any absence requires a note or telephone call explaining why. Head lice are common! Please check regularly and treat as recommended. Any medicines will need to be kept in the office with a completed medical form. Please inform us of any diatry needs for school dinners.

Starting School Children will integrate into school over a 5 week basis: Week 1- Home Visits. Week 2- Morning or Afternoon Week 3- Morning with dinner or afternoon. Week 4- All children morning with dinner. Week 5- All children full time

What you can do to help To prepare your child for starting school there are many things you can do to help. Prepare your child to be toilet trained before September. Share books with your child, talk about the pictures and discuss what has happened. Demonstrate how your child’s name is written, help them to recognise it in written form. Sing simple counting songs, count objects around the house. Give your child practice of cutting and colouring in. Encourage your child to get dressed independently, put on their own shoes and socks.

Tonight Choose a date for home visit, confirm your address. Sign up for Teddy Bears picnic and Story time. Take home the Brentry Information pack Taste the school dinners! Enquire about uniform Look around Reception Feel free to ask questions! Thank you!
