HISTORICAL TIME PERIOD BY: Camille Carmichael

Evidence number one “Today we arrive at Elis island" (page 89) paragraph number one. The moment the doors opened in 1892, Elis island was the door way to America. it was used for immigration proposes The author is very accurate because the time period the book was written in is was the correct time period that Elis island was used

Evidence number two  (Page 44) paragraph one “we will try our luck in the next steam boat company”  People would have to get inspections from doctors to enter a steam boat to travel to Ellis island  People would have to get inspections because if you have a disease or an illness that is contagious they don’t want you to take it to America  The author is very accurate because the time period that this happened is the time period that the book is written in

Evidence number three  (page 36) paragraph one “mama nodded still chewing slowly on her lunch of one cold potato and roll”  Some immigrants were very poor because they were leaving the home  They had to get around on the food that they need to survive some times even less than that  Some had to leave and if they got setback they would be killed for different reasons  The author is very accurate because the time period that people had little food because of immigration was the time period that the book was written in

Evidence number four ●(page one) paragraph two “papa said that we should hide in different train cars” ● Jews in Russia had to sneak out of Russia to escape poverty ●They were not allowed to settle in Russia for being a different religion ●They wanted to go to America so they could believe in this religion ● most Jews if they got caught they would be killed ●That’s why people had to hide on trains and hope that the guards would not catch them ●The author is very accurate because the time period that this was going on was the time period she wrote about in her book

Evidence number five  (page 81) paragraph two “I nearly drowned at sea in a horrible storm everyone did not have my luck but I am alive”  When boarding on ships to the journey of Ellis island it took two week or more to get there  Only 75% of people survived and could get a chance to reach Ellis island  The storms on the boats were very rough most people died from them  The author was very actuate because the time when boats were rough on there vogue home

Evidence number six ●(page 101) paragraph one “if you don’t eat they will send you back to Russia” ●Immigrant's that didn’t make it thought the doctor inspection the doctors marked with a piece of chalk for further inspection ●Only if you passed the second exam is when you get to move on ●If you didn’t pass the exam then they would send you to the Ellis island hospital if there was enough room ●If you get there and they don’t see any improvements then you would get sent back such as not eating ●The author was very actuate because the time of the immigration was when this book took place

Evidence number seven  (Page 51) paragraph one “saying good bye to mama and papa hurt in my chest the way it hurt when Saul held me under water to long”  If you did not pass the health inspection and your parents did to board on a ship to go to Ellis Island you had to leave your parents and stay till you were well  In the book I read she got very lucky and a organization helped her called HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) they sent her to a house that she could stay at and get treatments till she was well  The author was very actuate because this time period that this kind of stuff happened is when the time period the book is written in

Evidence number eight o (page 5) paragraph two “we ether take them Rifka or we leave them for the greedy peasants” o Russian peasants are people that are very poor and are at the bottom of the social class almost like unpopular people o They were so poor they did not have enough money to travel to America o The people that left there houses and there stuff that they didn’t take to America the peasants would take o The author was very actuate because the time period when that these people that were poor were considered Russian peasants

Evidence number nine  (page 5) paragraph one “your brothers in America have sent for us its time to leave Russia”  Many parents send their older children to America before they go because the women is either very pregnant with another child  Or they will send them to build there lives and get settled there so it will be easier to settle with the rest of the family  the other children in the family may not even Know the other kids  The author was very actuate because the time period of immigration problems are when the book is written

Evidence number ten  (page 16) paragraph two “get all of your things out of the train! Take off your clothes a doctor must examine you before you enter Poland”  People had to get an exam to cross a border because they don’t want t bring in any disease into Poland  You had to completely strip in front of everyone!  The author was very actuate because the time period of disease exams
