AGENDA “I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for?” ~Franz Kafka 19 Apr Reading Journal Reminders Edmodo Assignment #1 Group Grading and Discussion Time Reflection If you have a SRP redo due today, please bring it up!

Reading Journal #1 General info:  Should be about 2 pages double spaced, typed up.  Should follow standard formatting expectations (including citing page numbers for quotes)  Should be 100% your own work and ideas- NOT something augmented from the web, not the same as your group members.  Turn into turnitin.com by 11:59 PM this Friday 4/19 (no paper copy needed) Specific Assignment (more helpful materials on blog):  Character analysis: Choose one or more of the main characters to analyze.  Not simply a character description-should focus on conflict, motivation, and how that character has impacted the story so far.  You could write a comparative analysis (character from this book vs. character from another book/movie you are familiar with)

Edmodo Assignment  “Hello Book Readers! Your task for this next week will be to post once about your book (can be a question, comment, or link), and to respond to at least two other posts by your group members. Post on your small group page, not the main class page. We're still testing this out...so let me know if any bumps occur along the way!”  Credit for posting by the end of the week (needs to be done BEFORE you come to class on Friday). Let’s see how it goes!

Group Grading Time  Goals:  Evaluate the quality of peer responses to quiz questions (and by doing so, demonstrate your own understanding of the plot, characters, and conflict in your novel)  Justify your group’s evaluation with specific feedback to your peer  Your own quizzes are being/have been evaluated today as well. Think about karma…be fair in your grading!

Quiz Grading Procedures As a group, each person should have a quiz to correct. Please write “C.B. [your initials/class period]” on the paper. For each quiz question:  Re-read the actual question.  Each person silently reads their peer’s response, and prepares an initial judgement.  Discuss the various responses to the question, then decide as a group what the final score should be for each response, then record that on the peer’s paper. Remember, there can often be multiple correct answers.  You need to write a short justification of WHY you’re giving that score on the paper…defend your evaluation! Ex. “4 - Claim was very clear and insightful, but not enough evidence to fully support it.”

Reflection  What did you and/or your group learn about your novels during this process?
