WARM UP: ENGLISH 9 29 JANUARY “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection” – Buddha “Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it. ” – M. Scott Peck “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” – Mark Twain “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” – Harvey Fierstein Pick one of the above quotations about which to write a five part paragraph. We will review the five part paragraph before you start writing!

5 PARTS OF A PERFECT PARAGRAPH 1.Topic sentence –Main point of paragraph 2.Elaboration of the topic sentence –Stretches out/explains the main point 3.Evidence –The proof (quotation) 4.Evidence reinforcement –Helps to connect main evidence to topic sentence 5.Conclusion –Reinforces thesis and wraps things up

Silence is harmful to individuals as well as societies as a whole. When one group is persecuted, the silence of the majority can mean death. When an individual is persecuted, they must remember that they can “never be bullied into silence” (Fierstein), because silence allows another person to define one’s life for them. We have the responsibility to ourselves to define our own lives, and the responsibility to humanity to speak up wherever there is persecution. We are worth the risks that come with the courage of defending ourselves and others.

In his memoir “Hunger,” Richard Wright uses personification when describing how hungry he feels. Hunger becomes his enemy that even follows him to bed. Wright states that he “began to wake up at night to find hunger standing at my bedside” (1). Instead of being a bully that only tortures him at school, hunger follows him home and harasses him. This personified version of hunger shows the constant feelings of pain and starvation that Wright experienced as a boy.
