NETIQUETTE zTEN COMMANDMENTS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW:

COMMANDMENT #1 zKEEP AN OPEN MIND: zAll Internet sites are not bad. zHowever, make sure you are using one that is valid and informative.

COMMANDMENT #2 zOnce you press the ENTER key, it’s over. zThere is NO TAKING IT BACK… zOnce you write that angry letter, it’s over; be extra careful what you say.

COMMANDMENT #3 zTyping counts and, sometimes, case does as well. zType carefully; some internet sites have confusing addresses, symbols and characters. zDon’t be too quick to blame the Internet for something you typed wrong. zAlmost everything on the Internet is case- sensitive.

COMMANDMENT #4 zBe flexible with time; Internet sites are busiest from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. zIt might be faster if you use it after hours. zBe patient.

COMMANDMENT #5 zNOT ALL INTERNET SITES ARE CREATED EQUALLY. zDon’t expect everything you see to be a great resource. zAnybody in the world can create a website. He/she does not have to know anything about the topic.

COMMANDMENT #6 zThere are billions of files and resources you can use. Don’t get frustrated. zThe Internet changes every single second of every day.

COMMANDMENT #7 zBe considerate of others and play by the rules. zThere is no central authority that governs the Internet. zHowever, the government may one day decide to do that if people do not use the Internet responsibly.

COMMANDMENT #8 zPRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. zYou have to practice searching to be able to research effectively. zThe more you learn, the more useful the Internet will be.

COMMANDMENT #9 zBE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF zWord of Mouth is best to learn. zThere is no official guidebook for the Internet.

COMMANDMENT #10 zHave fun and be responsible!

NETIQUETTE RULES: zNetiquette refers to the rules of behavior on-line. zThese are rules you must also follow in this classroom.

RULE #1 - z BEHAVIOR ON THE INTERNET IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL z If YOU don’t follow the rules, WE will know.  You will suffer the consequences.

RULE #2 - z Individual differences are to be fostered and respected. z Everyone is different, and there are a lot of different opinions out there. z YOUR OPINION IS NOT ALWAYS THE RIGHT OPINION. z Be aware of cultural differences.

RULE #3 - z Don’t intimidate, insult, or verbally abuse anyone. z Just because you are different, this does not give you the right to flame someone. z You might also get kicked off the internet because of this.

RULE #4 - z The key to the success of the Internet is self-regulation. z You will have to regulate your own actions. z However, don’t forget that, if you are using school networks or online services, there are network administrators monitoring your every action! z Just because you delete a file does not mean it is deleted completely!

RULE #5 - z What’s yours is yours, and what’s not is not. z Be very careful of copyrighted material. You can get sued for using it without permission.

RULE #6 - z If you need to download a large file, do it during non-business hours. z The Internet is like a highway, it has traffic jams. z Don’t slow everyone else down just because you are using all the bandwidth listening to the radio online.

TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR ADVENTURE: z Prepare to explore new places… z Think of your mistakes as chances to learn something new z Use your imagination z Ask for help (and be sure to say thanks!) z Show people the same respect you would if they were sitting right next to you
