Supporting Book Aid International on World Book Day 2016

It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, marked in over 100 countries all over the world. It’s also a great chance to help raise money for children who have no access to books. What is World Book Day? World Book Day is a celebration!

Book Aid International is a charity dedicated to increasing access to books and libraries in sub-Saharan Africa and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Since 1954, they have sent more than 32 million books to libraries in the developing world. Each year, Book Aid International ships up to one million brand new books to libraries in Africa. What is Book Aid International?

Our books are collected from our warehouse in south London and transported on large ships. The brand new books are then safely delivered to our partner libraries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Cameroon Kenya Malawi Ethiopia Eritrea Occupied Palestinian Territories Somalia and Somaliland South Sudan Tanzania Uganda Zambia Zimbabwe Which countries do we support?

In sub-Saharan Africa books are a precious resource which very few can afford. The libraries Book Aid International supports provide brand new books to children and young adults living in some of the poorest communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Imagine a world without books! “I am happy to see children running to the library from the schools even before they get to their homes to change. It tells us how valuable things are in the library.” Margaret Apondi, Teacher

Hundreds of schools across the UK fundraise for Book Aid International each year on World Book Day. Lots of children dress up as their favourite book characters and donate £1; others take part in quizzes, book sales and readathons. Donations raised by schools help Book Aid International to select, pack and ship thousands of brand new books to libraries in Africa. It costs us around £2 to send a book to Africa. Fundraising on World Book Day

In 2015 schools across the UK raised an incredible £115,000 in support of our work! Watch our film to see how your support can really change lives. Happy World Book Day and thank you for all your support! You make the difference!
