Warm-Up In your groups, come up with a list of the top ten most important events of your generation. Perspectives

On Monday, we looked at the reader-response lens; considering how someone’s background, prior knowledge, experiences, emotions, etc., might influence the way they interpret a text. On Tuesday, we looked at the marxist lens; considering how a text confirms or challenges stereotypes about social classes (rich, poor, middle class). Yesterday, we looked at the feminist lens; considering how a text confirms or challenges stereotypes about gender. Today we are going to continue practicing this concept by analyzing the song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel.

“We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel 1 st listen through: (without lyrics) come up with a theory about what the song is about - remember, there are no wrong answers at this stage. 2 nd listen through: (with lyrics) this song is a collection of newspaper headlines. Identify any names/events that you recognize. Whole Class Discussion: What examples of poetic devices can we find in the poem? Feminist Lens: Of the fifty-six people mentioned in the song, only seven are women.

Historical Lens The historical lens: to understand a text, you need to understand the period in which it was written. This also refers to considering how a text reflects the common ideas and beliefs of the time when it was written.

Final Poem Response I want you to use the list we created today of important events of your generation, along with your own ideas, to create your own version of “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” I want you to write one verse (eight lines). It should match the rhythm and rhyme scheme of the song (refer to the notes we took today, or reread the poem). The internet is a great resource for “important events of the (insert decade here).”
