To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter 7
Presentation transcript:

We’ll take a reading quiz on Chapter 7! No talking until all quizzes have been collected.

A few days after Jem got his pants back from the Radley fence, he finally told Scout something strange that he noticed. What did Jem tell Scout about his pants?

Think a minute. Then, together, let’s discuss: at the end of Chapter Seven, we find Jem crying after learning about the tree being filled with concrete. 1. How do you interpret his sorrow? Why do you think he is so affected by such a simple action? 2. What major theme does Jem learn from this event? Keep in mind...  who filled the tree hole with concrete  why this person probably filled the hole  what Jem was truly excited about with the tree presents Keep in mind:

Warm-up: At the end of Chapter Seven, we see Jem crying after learning of what Nathan Radley has done (taking away their treasures and restricting Boo from communicating). Some might interpret this as Jem’s first understanding of the cruelty of human beings. As young adults, you have likely come across a moment when you realized how cruel human beings can be. Write a journal entry in which you describe a time when you had a realization of the cruelty that humanity can display.

 Homework: Read to the end of Chapter 8.

Literary Criticism 3.12 Analyze the way in which a work of literature is related to the themes and issues of its historical period. (Historical approach)

 What happened this weekend in To Kill a Mockingbird that you found interesting, important or confusing?  Let’s continue reading Chapter 8 of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Read until the end of Chapter 8.
