Designing a Model Curriculum for the Modern Workplace: Points to Ponder

 Learning in and for the workplace is continuous and un-constrained  It is not confined to accredited courses delivered by external bodies  Learners learn formally and informally in a number of situations and variety of settings.  Many of these learning situations are not taught. Learning in Technical and Vocational Education Settings

 Traditional curricula are described in terms of knowledge and /or skill contained in modules, courses and qualifications.  They are validated by grades and credits earned  Prescribed timetable for delivery  Prescribed timeframe for validation and certification of progress Conceptions of Curriculum: Traditional

What is the value? Basic Certificate in Cookery Level 1 One year of Study High Student Debt Opportunity Cost Low ROI (i.e. hourly rate)

 Emerging curricula are based on clearly specifying the outcomes that will be ACQUIRED during a programme of learning.  Flexibility in the timetable for acquisition  Flexibility in the timeframe of validation of progress Emerging Conceptions of Curriculum

What is the value? Bar Managers Licence Limited Student Debt Promotion and Responsibility High ROI (i.e. hourly rate)

 In emerging models, learner progress is measured against identified standards.  The responsibility of meeting these standards rests with the learner.  In these learner centric models learners need to be self- regulated. Learner Centric

Micro-Credentials A Micro-Credential is a validated indicator of an accomplishment, skill, quality or interest that is linked to identified individual.

Micro-credentials Validate Capability

Micro-credentials are awarded on the acquisition of specific knowledge or demonstrated competency of an identified skill. They are validated by recognised professional bodies or educational institutions. The conditions associated with the award of the micro-credential are maintained by the formal credentialing bodies. In essence they indicate competency and compliance and as such they could be regarded as a “summative” award, they Validate Capability. What is a Micro-Credential?

Ecosystem An ecosystem provides the infrastructure for individuals to provide a complete picture of all their achievements through the display of a collection(s) of artefacts. These collections signal status and capability to a variety of stakeholders including potential employers, educational organisations, professional and social groups

The Fundamentals of Ecosystems
