MAIN IDEA The Big Picture

Which of these sentences is the main idea? Which are the details? ◦ Cross country has recently started and meetings are held after school. ◦ At Lougheed there are a variety of sport activities offered. ◦ Intermurals such as badminton are also running during the lunch hour. ◦ * Remember the main idea is the overall idea or big picture related to a subject. Details are specific statements about the topic. They describe and support the main idea.

Which of these sentences is the main idea? Which are the details? ◦ Detail: Cross country has recently started and meetings are held after school. ◦ Main idea: At Lougheed there are a variety of sport activities offered. Detail: Intermurals such as badminton are also running during the lunch hour.

Final Task ◦ On the back of your portrait, write a paragraph for your “Big Picture: Main Idea Paragraph Portrait”. The paragraph should include the main idea that you chose for your portrait and the three supporting detail sentences (captions). Don’t forget to add a concluding sentence!

The details in a paragraph are like the legs that support a tabletop or desktop! ◦ We will work together to put the Christopher Columbus paragraphs into the Main Idea Table organizer. ◦ We will do paragraph 1 together. ◦ You will do paragraph 2 on your own.

Which Details Are Important? ◦ Look at the images below. Which do not belong? Why?

Which Details are Important? ◦ A paragraph resembles the previous slide. The main idea of the images on the slide is candy you can eat, and the details are the specific types of candy. On the slide however are objects that don’t belong – food that is not a piece of candy and an advertisement for candy. ◦ The same thing can happen in a paragraph. It may contain irrelevant or unrelated details that seem related but do not directly support the main idea of the paragraph. They may be about the topic, but they do not support the main idea.

Before We Continue ◦ What do the words relevant and irrelevant mean? ◦ Great! Now we are ready to continue, let’s read through some information together and figure out which details don’t relate well to the main idea. Even though they are about the topic they don’t support the main idea or big picture.

Irrelevant Details ◦ Example 1 ◦ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., became a well-known civil rights leader because of his role in the 1955 boycott of city buses in Montgomery, Alabama. Other civil rights leaders worked on boycotts in southern cities, too. Until this time, city buses were segregated, meaning that African Americans had to sit at the back of the bus and often had to give up their seats for white people. One day, Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back of the bus, and then she refused to give up her seat for a white person. The bus was not very large. When Mrs. Parks was arrested, Dr. King led a boycott of the Montgomery buses. People who supported Dr. King and the boycott decided not to take the buses until African Americans could sit where they pleased.

Irrelevant Details ◦ On the previous slide I think the sentence “Other civil rights leaders worked on boycotts in southern cities too” is an irrelevant detail. It gets away from the main idea about why Dr. King led this particular boycott in Montgomery. ◦ Lets look at the second paragraph. Write on a sheet of paper the two sentences that aren’t relevant details.

Irrelevant Details ◦ Example 2 ◦ The 1950s in America were an age of prosperity, or economic well-being. The country grew stronger and its population increased. Two new states, Alaska and Hawaii, became a part of the United States. Countless new machines speeded up household chores. These machines were greatly needed. Watching television became a popular leisure, or free-time, activity. In fact, there was too much free time during this period.

Irrelevant Details ◦ For the third paragraph you will physically rip the irrelevant details out of the third paragraph! After reading the paragraph aloud you will write the main idea of the paragraph on the “Paragraph Rip and Tear” sheet. Then you should identify five to seven details, both relevant and irrelevant, from the paragraph and write then inside the detail columns. Eliminate the irrelevant details by tearing or cutting off those strips. When all are complete we will discuss your choices, prepare to justify your decision.

Irrelevant Details ◦ Example 3 ◦ New scientific developments helped increase farm production in the 1800s. Better seeds and livestock were developed. Crop rotation and fertilizers were used to improve the soil. So much food was produced that there was a surplus. Fortunately, George Washington Carver discovered the following new uses for soybeans, peanuts, and sweet potatoes: face cream cooking oil, tooth polish and paint. Carver was born into slavery.
