Chapter 10 Cell Growth and Division. Think about it…  How would you describe the process by which a multicellular organism increases its size?  Why.
Bell Ringer: Describe whether you believe large cells perform tasks better or more efficiently than small cells. Why or why not? Take out a sheet of notebook.
10.1 Cell Growth Living things grow because it produces more and more cells. Are the cells of an adult larger than the cells of a baby?
Limits to Cell Growth The larger a cell becomes, the more demands the cell places on its DNA and more trouble the cell has moving enough nutrients and.
 Understand why cells divide  Describe the events of the cell cycle  Draw diagrams representing the stages of the cell cycle.
The Cell cycle CHAPTER 8 PART 2. Cell Growth  As organisms grow, do they grow because cells get larger and larger or because more cells are produced?
Chapter 10 Review. You must answer in complete sentences! 1. Explain TWO problems that can occur when a cell gets too big.
Be able to: Explain the problems that growth causes for cells.
Warm-up What is the difference between mitosis and cytokinesis? Get out Online Mitosis WS – to be turned in.
Mitosis  Catalyst:  How do organisms grow?  What happens during interphase? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!
Cell Cycle. Why do cells divide? Growth --by adding cells, not having them get bigger --cells are not efficient for exchanging materials if they are too.
Ch 10 Review. G1, G2 and S are often called a.interphase.. b. prophase.. c. Metaphase d. telophase.

Warm-Up 11/15/10 LIST the Phases of the Cell Cycle. Which Phase of the CELL CYCLE includes Prophase, Telophase, Anaphase, Metaphase? Put the Above-mentioned.
Warm-Up #1 11/30 1. Write down these 3 formulas:
Chapter 10. Limits to cell size  Ability of DNA to control cell functions ◦ Think of only having one set of directions and tools to build an entire.

Cell Growth and Division Chapter 10. Cell Growth Does an adult have bigger cells than a child?
Chapter 10 Cell Growth Cell Growth Living things grow by producing more cells. Cells of an adult are the same size as the cells of a baby, adults.
{ #2 – How many phases are in the ENTIRE cell cycle? SIX!!
Cell Growth & Division. Limits to Cell Growth DNA “Overload”: if a cell gets to big, DNA cannot serve the increasing needs of the growing cell. Exchanging.
How many stages of cell division did you see?
Ch 10 Mitosis. Cell Growth Limits to Cell Growth –Why do cells divide? The larger a cell gets, the more demands the cell puts on the DNA.
Chapter 10: Cell Growth & Division Essential Questions: What problems does growth cause for cells? What are the main events of the cell cycle? What are.
Warm-Up In you warm up section: – How big do you think your cells are? How many cells do you have? – Write a goal for yourself in biology for the remainder.
Cell Cycle Why do cells have to divide? DNA Overload – the Nucleus (boss of cell) can’t get the messages out to organelles fast enough. Material Exchange–
Ch 10 Cellular Reproduction Review. Review Rules Work with teammates to get a cooperative answer within 60 seconds Each correct answer will get a point.
Cell Growth and Division. When cells get too big, two problems happen 1. DNA gets overloaded 2. Materials can’t get exchanged 1. Can’t get into and out.
Unit 6 NOTES: Cell Cycle 6.A- Cell Size Cell Size is limited by… DNA Overload – there is not enough DNA to communicate with the rest of the cell, or organelles,

Chapter 10 Review Battle Royale-Style

Battle Royale Rules! Each person from your team will be up at the board one time. Each person from your team may go up to the board to assist someone one time. After that they may not be a helper for the remainder of the game. No direct communication between the group and the board. You must show your work with appropriate units for math problems. You must write in a complete, stand-alone sentence for explanations (IQIA). Lists must be written in order (answers only) pen down first. The point will be awarded for the team with the correct, complete answer that puts their pen down first. Candy for the winning team!!! Candy for the winning team!!!

Let’s assemble teams!

Team RIGHT: Tables on the Right Team MIDDLE: Middle tables Team LEFT: Left tables

You must answer in complete sentences! 1. Explain TWO problems that can occur when a cell gets too big. DNA overload Exchange of materials

You must answer in complete sentences! 2. What are the two main events of the cell cycle Interphase and Cell Division (M Phase)

You must show all calculations and units! 3. What is the surface of a cube with a length of 4 cm, a width of 4 cm and a height of 4 cm? 4x4x6 = 96 cm 2

You must answer in a complete sentence! 4. Look at the pictures below (chromatin has been stained red). What phase of mitosis is being shown in picture B? Explain how you know. Metaphase – chromosomes lined up in middle of cell A B C D

You must show all calculations and units! 5. What is the surface area to volume ratio of a cube with 5 cm sides? SA = 5x5x6 = 150 cm 2 V = 5x5x5 = 125 cm 3 SA:V = 6:5

Draw a pretty picture! 6. Draw a picture of a duplicated chromosome and label the centromere and sister chromatids.

NO need to write in complete sentences! 7. List the phases of mitosis in order ! Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase

You must answer in a complete sentence! 8. Describe what happens in anaphase. Sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell

You must answer in complete sentences! 9. How do the internal and external regulators help the timing of the cycle? Internal – checkpoint inside the cell to regulate when the cell is ready to advance to the next step of the cell cycle External – speed up or slow down the cell cycle

You must answer in complete sentences! 10. How are cancer cells different than other cells? Cancer cells can not regulate the cell cycle and divide uncontrollably.

SHOW YOUR WORK! Don’t forget units! 11. Calculate the percent absorption of the cube below. Total volume = 2x2x2 = 8 cm 3 Uncolored volume = 1x1x1 = 1 cm 3 ; colored = 7 cm 3 Percent absorption = 7/8 = 87.5%

Extra Practice Calculate the percent absorption of the cube below. Total volume = 1.5x1.5x1.5 = cm 3 Uncolored v. = 1x1x1 = 1 cm 3 ; colored = cm 3 Percent absorption = / = 70.4%
