Class of 1965 Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) Update Presentation 22 October

RMC needs to expand its activities that enhance education: o Teaching beyond:  Technological & Pedagogical Innovations in Education. o Student success beyond:  Writing Centre,  Math Assist Programme. We need to look at teaching and student success in the broadest possible way. CITL 2

CITL concept presented to Faculty : o Joint Faculty Board meeting with CMR of St Jean and RMC of Canada. Overwhelming support. Too many volunteers. Large multidisciplinary committees at RMC CITL Committee 3

18 members: o All faculties represented, o One TEA winner and two runners-up, o Reps from three colleges, o Students:  2 cadets,  2 graduate students. o Other stakeholders:  Library,  Division of Continuing Studies,  Training Wing,  Language Centre,  CDA. CITL Committee 4

Group has met 6 times: o 9 meetings due to difficulties getting together. CITL Committee: o reviewed concept 15 June ( entire group ), o developed list of required data 24 June ( entire group ), o developed questionnaires over summer 27 July, 10 Sept, 16 Sept ( sub-committee ), o Reviewed questionnaires 29 Sept ( entire group ). CITL Committee 5

We need to survey the following: o ALL students,  What do they want and need. o ALL instructors,  What do they want and need. o Subject matter experts (SME) at other universities,  What is new and what works. Conduct an inventory of teaching and learning tools/programmes at our colleges. Required information 6

Survey all students and instructors. Survey has 4 parts (11-14 questions). o Tombstone information, o Information on teaching, o Information on student services, o Open-ended comments. Delivered using ClassClimate® software, o Tool we use for course evaluations. Required information – Surveys 7

Where are we now? o Questions fully developed, o Consulted with the Faculty Association, o Translation to French will be completed 23 Oct, o Research Ethics Board review underway, o ClassClimate survey set-up 50% completed. Test surveys on instructors and students. Survey delivery slated for early November. Analysis in December-January. Required information – Surveys 8

Subject matter expert (SME) survey: o Telephone/visit with SME at (tentatively):  Queen’s,  Ottawa,  Trent,  Moncton,  Laurentien o Questions being developed by sub-committee. o SME survey to be conducted in November. Required information – Surveys 9

Inventory of existing teaching/learning/services at RMC of Canada completed by Dr. Scoppio. Document being updated by CMR St. Jean and CFC. Required information – Inventory 10

Deliver survey to (Nov): o Students, o Instructors, o SME. Analysis of data (Dec-Jan). Present results to CITL group (Jan). CITL develops plan and sets priorities. Next steps 11
