Literacy Rate The number of people who can read and write The better the educational system in a country, the higher the literacy rate. When education is not a high priority in a country, the lower the literacy rate.

Standard of Living A level of survival and comfort in everyday life enjoyed by a community, class, or individual: The well-educated generally have a high standard of living.

Languages Of Europe Over 200 native languages in Europe Most can be put into three categories - Germanic -( English and German). The largest native group with 20% of European speaking a Germanic Language. - Romance -( Italian, French & Spanish). These language come from Latin- the language of the Roman Empire- Roman ce. - Slavic- mostly Northern and Eastern European Countries. Include Russia. Written in the Cyrillic Alphabet.

Germanic Language Group Has most native speakers Native speakers live mostly in northwest and central Europe About 20% of Europeans speak English or German as their native language Most Europeans learn English as a second language in their schools

Romance Language Group This group includes French, Italian, and Spanish These are found in the south and west of Europe These languages come from Latin, the language of the Roman Empire The Roman alphabet is used to write Romance and Germanic languages

Slavic Language Group This includes Russian They are found in central and eastern Europe They are written with a Cyrillic Alphabet

Languages Of Europe -The European Union ( EU) recognizes 23 official languages in Europe. -Because of the language diversity European school children usually learn 1-2 other languages in addition to their native one. -Over ½ ( 400 million) Europeans speak English because it is often a choice for their 2 nd language.

The culture of Germany and the high Alps region is called Bavarian Culture. Yodeling is traditional form of music commonly found at Oktoberfest.

St. Nicholas Day is celebrated on December 6th in Germany as well as in other European countries. On the evening before the 6th, children place their newly cleaned shoes in front of the door in the hope that Nicholas might fill them with nuts, fruits, chocolate, and sweets. Germany Customs Traditions: The Christmas Tree originated in Germany. A fir tree was brought in to the house and decorated with candles in honor of the Advent. Later candies and stripes of cloth were tied to the tree for decorations.

BOXING DAY How It Got Started Boxing Day originated in England in the middle of the nineteenth century under Queen Victoria. It is spent with family and friends at open gatherings with lots of food, fun, friendship and love. Customs Boxing Day is so called because it was the custom on that day for tradesmen to collect their Christmas boxes or gifts in return for good and reliable service throughout the year. Boxing Day is also St. Stephen's Day. St Stephen was a little known saint who achieved eternal fame by being the first Christian to be martyred for his faith by being stoned to death shortly after Christ's crucifixion.
