Problem Solving with Time Skip counting and number lines
The objective for today is to: I can tell what time it is and how much time has passed by using a number line or by skip counting.
Vocab! Half past = 30 minutes past the hour 1 Special Rule: lf blend Other consonants: 4 Other vowels: 2 Quarter past = 15 minutes past the hour 3 Special Rules: qu blend, ar, and er Other consonants: 4 Other vowels:1
Review skip counting Skip count by 5! 0, 5, 10, 15…. Skip count by 10! 0, 10, 20, 30… Skip count by 15! 0, 15, 30… How does skip counting by 5, 10, or 15 make it easier for us to tell time?
Practice with skip counting! Hour hand is on the 4, minute hand is on the 12. Write your answer on your paper. Hour hand is on the 4, minute hand is on the 3. Write your answer on your paper. Hour hand is on the 3, minute hand is on the 9. Write your answer on your paper.
Practice with Number Bonds! 60 minutes 50 10
Practice with Number Bonds! 40 minutes 30 10
Practice with Number Bonds! 45 minutes 35 10
Practice with Number Bonds! 35 minutes 25 10
Practice with a word problem! There are 12 tables in the cafeteria. Five students sit at each of the first 11 tables. Three students sit at the last table. How many students are sitting at the 12 tables in the cafeteria? Hint: Use a multiplication strategy! x 5 = = 58
Practice with a word problem! Use your ruler to draw a 12 cm number line. Skip count by 5 to label each cm like we did yesterday. Put your finger on 0. Count by ones from 0-5. What numbers did you count between 0 and 5? Put your finger on 5. Count on by ones from What numbers did you count between 5 & 10?
Let’s find 58 minutes on the number line. Put your finger on 0. Count by fives to 55. Let’s draw the tick marks from Count with me as I draw the missing tick marks from 55 to 60. Let’s start with 55, which is already there. How many tick marks did I draw? Count on by ones to find 58 using the tick marks we made in the intervals between 55 and 60. How many groups of fives did we count? How many ones did we count? 11 fives + 3. How can we write that as multiplication? What other multiplication problems could we make? (11 x 5) + 3
Problem 2 I left my house at 7:00. I arrived at school this morning at 7:37 a.m. How long did it take to get to school? Let’s first find that time on our number line. Label 7:00 a.m. above the 0 mark and 8:00 a.m. above the 60 mark. Which units should we count by to get to 7:37? How many fives? How many ones? Who can provide a multiplication sentence? Did anyone come up with a different multiplication sentence? Plot the point on the number line. 7:00 8:00 Count by fives to 7:35 and then by ones to 7: (7 x 5) + 2 = 37 minutes.
