Building Your Own Number Line
Step 1: Fold your strip in half.
Step 2: Fold it in half again, and then one more time. You should have 8 sections of equal length.
Step 3: Using a ruler, create 4 horizontal lines using pencil (seen in green) below the line already given.
Step 4: Create a scale using the folded lines. Make one at either end as well.
Step 5: Label the center 0 in black. The interval is ½. Each integer is right below the number line. Each fraction is in the 2 nd Positive numbers should be black. Negative numbers should be red. 3232
Step 6. Create new lines between each of the existing ones (seen in blue). Label them by 1/4ths under the 1/2s All negative numbers with a denominator of 4 should be written in purple. All positive numbers with a denominator of 4 should be written in blue.
Step 7: Using the same color as the fractions with a denominator of 2, create the equivalent fraction with 4 under it. Do the same with the whole numbers You should make sure that all the numbers in a column (vertical, up and down) are the same color
Step 8: Using the same color as the fractions with a denominator of 4, create the equivalent fraction with 8 under it You should make sure that all the numbers in a column (vertical, up and down) are the same color
Step 9: Using the same color as the fractions with a denominator of 8, create the equivalent fraction with 100 under it You should make sure that all the numbers in a column (vertical, up and down) are the same color
Step 10: Whoo! The hard part is over! Now, above the number line, use the correct color and write the decimal of each fraction You should make sure that all the numbers in a column (vertical, up and down) are the same color
Step 10: Almost done, I promise! Now, above the decimals, write each number’s percent. Only on the positive side You should make sure that all the numbers in a column (vertical, up and down) are the same color % 0% 50%75%100% 125%150%175%200%
