NSF International Network for Advanced & Multifunctional Materials (INAMM) Amar Bhalla (PI) and Ruyan Guo (UTSA); S. Priya, N. Ramakrishnan, J. Heremans, and (V. Tech) Lead-Free Multiferroics and Remote Measurement Laboratories Amar S. Bhalla, University of Texas at San Antonio, DMR Development of non-lead multifunctional multiferroics is one of the major emphasis of the future electronic industries. New lead free BaTiO 3 :(BiNa)TiO 3 and BaTiO 3 :BaZrO 3 relaxor materials are developed and detailed properties are investigated. Lead-free BaTiO 3 :Ni Ferrite, magnetoelectric composites of layered structures geometry in 2:2 connectivity pattern are designed. High sensitivity ( pT/Oe-cm) is achievable from such composites. New lead-free (KLi)(TaNb)O 3 Single crystals in collaboration with Harbin University of Science and Technology, China are developed for electrooptic and electronic sensor applications. The initial studies suggest the excellent device potential of these crystals. UTSA and VT have successfully demonstrated the ‘magnetoelectric measurement capabilities at distance’. Researchers from UTSA could make the measurement at VT in real time and vice versa. The capabilities to include other experiments and to the international partners are being expanded. Results at UTSA measurement remotely at VT Schematic of remote laboratory

NSF International Network for Advanced & Multifunctional Materials (INAMM) Amar Bhalla (PI) and Ruyan Guo (UTSA); S. Priya, N. Ramakrishnan, J. Heremans, and (V. Tech) International Network for Advanced and Multifunctional Materials Amar S. Bhalla, University of Texas at San Antonio, DMR International Symp on Multifunctionality of Ferroics and Multiferrics held at UTSA, San Antonio (Oct.2010). Over 60 participants from our partners in the program from Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, India, Brazil and USA (including Puerto Rico) attended this two days event. The proceedings of this symposium will be published as a special volume of the "International Journal of the Ferroelectrics and Multi-Functionalities" by Taylor and Francis. Multifunctional materials - materials capable of depicting multisensing, actuating and smart functionalities UTSA & VT take the lead along with a team of researchers from seven other countries to promote the research in the area of Multifunctional Ferroics & Multiferroics UTSA and VT teams established Virtual Lab experimentation capabilities that enable real-time collaborative research amongst the international partner institutes in the INAMM Program NSF INAMM Symposium was held at Roanoke, VA, Aug Topics addressed including multiferroic memory, multifunctional yarns, and magnetoelectric composites, etc. Applications, processing and characterization techniques were also addressed at the meeting. Attendees were from US, Korea, Japan, and China. Knowledge disseminations and Publications in : 2 books (ed.), 7 conferences, 2 workshops (HBCU school and International), 7 international visiting PhD students, 3 visiting scholars, and more than 20 journal publications. Graduated 3 MS and 2 PhD students.
